Swami Nikhilanand left behind his Western beliefs and chose to adopt Hinduism as a young man. He travelled to India and studied in the ashrams of Jagadguru Shree Kripaluji Maharaj, learning Hindi, Sanskrit, and the essence of the prime Bhartiya scriptures (Upnishads, Darshan Shastras, Gita, Bhagwatam). When the time came, his Guruji, Shree Kripaluji Maharaj, gave him the order of sanyas. Since then, Swami Nikhilanand has lectured throughout the U.S., inspiring audiences with his clear and practical representation of our Hindu dharm.

This is a follow-up from a previous story: Swami Nikhilanand represented Hinduism at Hindu-Jewish Solidarity Day

More pictures from the 1st Annual Hindu-Jewish Solidarity Day held on January 9, 2011 organized by Hindus of Greater Houston and Bridge Houston.

Swami Nikhilanand of JKP Barsana Dham, the US Ashram of Jagadguru Shree Kripaluji Maharaj, led an invocation in Sanskrit and spoke to his Jewish brothers and sisters on behalf of Hinduism, and joined Jews in an Israeli dance.

The "First Annual Hindu-Jewish Solidarity Day" has broken the ice, created immense goodwill and has laid the foundation for more strategic work and synergy between Hindus and Jews.

One blogger commented: "Here are two groups of people of different faiths that are able to respect each other and coexist. It doesn't happen often enough. This is very cool."

Another commented: "Hope such Hindu-Jewish bonhomie can be replicated in other cities in USA, Canada, UK/Europe and Australia. Keep up the good work."

Houston: When leaders of the Hindu and Jewish communities came together this past weekend at the India House, it turned out to be more than just an afternoon of revelry in celebration of two world cultures.

Rather, through the educational nature of the event with both communities taking the emotional journey back in time to revisit history, it was revealed to the astonishment of many in the audience, that both cultures are old friends who shared a close bond from over two thousand years ago when the first group of Jews migrated to India and made that country their home.

Hosted jointly by the Hindus of Greater Houston (HGH) and BridgeHouston (BH) the 1st Annual Hindu-Jewish Solidarity Day held on January 9, 2011, with a limited guest list of only 100 vetted invitees, brought together prolific leaders, rabbis, monks, and activists from several influential synagogues, temples, and organizations in this city. The blustery weather failed to deter gatherees in ochre robes, kippahs, sarees, and in deference to Texas, cowboy boots, who met at the reception preceding the event and mingled convivially over samosas, delectable Jewish desserts, and hot tea.

"When two communities get together in friendship, it is a good thing. I hope it sustains itself and that we can continue to build on what we have in common," said Lee Wunsch, President and CEO of the Jewish Federation of Greater Houston.

The program began with invocations in Sanskrit and Hebrew by Swami Nikhilananda of Barsana Dham in Austin, and Rabbi Steven Morgen of the Congregation Beth Yeshurun; both prayers expressed similar sentiments of cultivating friendships and of kindness to others. Ira Bleiweiss, founder of BH, lauded HGH's Ravi Raghavan for being "the driving force" in facilitating the occasion.

"I'm so glad Ravi motivated me to do this. We have no interfaith connection with the Hindu community yet we have common histories and challenges that we face because of our faith. We're also non-proselytizing," said Bleiweiss. "For over 2000 years Jewish people have lived in India and have never been persecuted by the Hindus. This forum will give us a better understanding of Hinduism and hopefully will be the start of something bigger and better and set an example for the rest of the nation. He added that BH and HGH are planning a joint public event later in the year in celebration of Hannukah, the Jewish Festival of Lights, and Diwali, the Hindu Festival of Lights.

Jewish guests were privy to a brief programme of Indian classical dances by artistes from the Nrityasri School of Dance. Thereafter, the Hindus were invited by their Jewish counterparts to join in sprightly interactive impromptu Jewish dances; all participated with gusto.

For more than 3000 years, Judaism has prevailed because of its strict adherence to laws or commandments that connect believers to god, said Rabbi Robert Haas, Associate Clergy at the Congregation Emanu El. Articulate and with tinges of humor, the Rabbi opened a wider window into Judaism and its basic principles and correlated several to Hinduism.

"We must be good human beings just because...and without expectation," said Rabbi Haas. He told of the miracle of Hannukah, which is observed for eight days and nights and commemorates the rededication of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem at the time of the Maccabean Revolt, 2nd century BCE.

"Like Diwali, Hannukah is celebrated with lights, the eternal light that signifies that god exists at all times," added Rabbi Haas.

Speaking on Hinduism, Swami Nikhilananda told gatherees that the religion is "amazingly vast yet monotheistic".

"God is absolute, He is one Supreme Being, formless, yet can have a form. He is omnipresent," said the swami. He elaborated on the significance of Diwali, which is the triumph of light over darkness and knowledge over ignorance.

In a well-researched presentation, Ravi Raghavan told of the migration of the Cochin Jews to India 2500 years ago where they found safe haven and assimilated into the local communities seamlessly. Quoting from Professor Nathan Katz's book The Jewish Diaspora in Hindu India, Raghavan described a quiet community that built synagogues and lived and worked and worshipped peacefully amidst the majority Hindu populace. Later other groups of Jews settled in various other parts of India.

"Hindus and Jews are natural allies, given our 2500 year old history of harmonious co-existence in Hindu-majority India. We share prolific proclivities, strategic concerns and common challenges in the current global scenario. Today, the feedback from both the Hindu and Jewish communities has been very positive. Hindus of Greater Houston and Bridge Houston will continue to work together to improve the synergy and goodwill between our communities," said Raghavan, who worked with the HGH team Girish Naik, Dharminder Dargan, and Vijay Pallod to put together the event.

Girish Naik was optimistic about the future successes of similar programmes.

"We have never had a gathering like this before to form a bridge between our cultures. We have so much in common," said Naik.

"This was a phenomenal afternoon," enthused journalist Micheal Duke with the Jewish Herald Voice, an authoritative publication that was started by Duke's grandmother 103 years ago in this city. "We have so much to celebrate together, particularly 2000 years of solidarity. Our children must be taught to keep this relationship alive for another 2000 years," added Duke.

Jagadguru Shree Kripaluji Maharaj on Jagadguru Divas

Makar Sankranti is the first Hindu festival of the solar calendar and is celebrated with great devotion, zeal and fervor on 14 January each year. It falls on the day when the sun enters the zodiac sign of Makar (Capricorn) and when day and night are of equal duration. Offerings of rice and milk are made to Surya Dev, God Sun.

Makar Sankranti is a day of great significance and marks the beginning of auspicious times. The beginning of the period, when the sun travels northwards, is considered highly favorable for auspicious activities. It is celebrated as Pongal in the South, but in the North it is observed as Makar Sankranti. On this day, thousands of devotees take a holy dip in the Ganges and other holy streams. At Ganga Sagar, where the river Ganga enters the sea, a grand fair and festival is held on this day. Devotees in large numbers reach the Sagar Island in boats, and bathe there at a point where Ganga meets the sea. There, the pilgrims also visit the Ashram of sage Kapil, who according to our Puranas had burnt to ashes the sixty thousand sons of the King Sagar of Ayodhya. These sixty thousand dead princes were subsequently revived and made to ascend to heaven by the sacred waters of Divine Ganga, as She flowed over their ashes.

Makar Sankranti day (14th Jan) is also called 'Jagadguru Divas' and is extremely special and important, especially to the followers of Shree Kripaluji Maharaj. On this day in 1957, our beloved spiritual master was conferred in Varsanasi with the highest title 'Jagadguru' by the Kashi Vidvat Parishat, an apex body of all the supreme scholars and masters of India of the time. He was only 35 years old at the time.

In many cities in India and arond the world, the celebrations are huge. People offer thousands of their colorful oblations to the Sun in the form of beautiful kites. The act stands as a metaphor for reaching to their beloved God. Last year, Swami Nikhilanand of Jagadguru Kripalu Parishat was invited by Vishwa Hindu Parishad of America (World Hindu Council), Gujarati Samaj of Greater Houston and Hindus of Greater Houston to be the "chief guest" at the National Makar Sankranti day festivities at George Bush Park in Houston and to inaugurate the Mass Surya Namaskara Yagya at the park, give a speech on the meaning of Makar Sankranti and participate in the kite flying festival (See press clippings above).

Swami Nikhilanand ji, disciple of Jagadguru Kripaluji Maharaj, will attend the festivities this year. If you are in the area, come and have a fun day of kite flying, yoga, music & games. Kite festival will take place on Sun, Jan 16th from 10am - 4pm at George Bush Park. In case of rain, the event will be held on Jan 23rd. Bring your own vegetarian picnic lunch. Event is being hosted by VHP America, Hindus of Houston & other organizations.

After the kite flying festival, you are welcome to attend two special programs in Houston, which will include kirtan and speech by Swami Nikhilanandji. The first one is a one day program from 12:30pm at Durga Bari temple (see event details), and the other is 7-day program from 7pm at Shirdi Sai Jalaram Mandir (see event details). Radhey Radhey
